We’ve Gone Bananas! With BANANAGRAMS!
 September 17th, 2009

I know what you are thinking…this must be a huge box full of bananas and a scale!

It’s the anagram game that will drive you bananas! –hence BANANAGRAMS!

The game’s 144 tiles come in a cute, yellow, banana shaped zipper-pouch! It’s a pouch that you can bring anywhere-to restaurants, picnics, school, airplanes… All you need is a table (no pens, paper, batteries, or timer). You don’t even need to wait your turn!

You can play Bananagrams with up to 8 players of all ages. Each player gets some tiles, someone declares “split” and the game begins. Everyone plays at their own pace and level, using their tiles to form individual crossword. If you can’t use a letter, you can “dump” that letter to take 3 new ones. Run out of letters, and “peel”, making every player to take a new tile. When there are no tiles left, the winner having used all of their tiles, yells “BANANAS!”

It’s a blast! I’ve been known to stay up with friends playing Bananagrams. I know they’ve wanted to leave, but I just need to play “one more time.”

There are several simple variations to playing, or you can come up with your own. Some play with some interesting categories of words (age appropriate, of course!), providing lots of laughs.

Bananagrams was listed as a must-have, one of the top ten best travel games and has been listed as a best-seller among toy and gift retailers.Wikipedia It was named 2009 Game of the Year by the Toy Industry Association.

Bananagrams is a great game to play with company, friends and family. For after dinner, at a picnic or while waiting at a restaurant, you won’t want to leave home without it!

Mmmmm…Noodle Kugel
 September 4th, 2009

Sweet foods are the main focus of the Rosh Hashanah meal, meant to symbolize sweetness for the New Year. For this reason, the apples and challah are often followed by a sweet noodle dish called Kugel.

Because of this, I wanted to bring you the best Noodle Kugel recipe I could find.  After baking up a bunch of batches, I settled on my favorite.  I kind of felt like Julie in Julie and Julia, except I can’t cook half as well as Julie, and Julia didn’t have a recipe for Kugel.  I am sure the recipe below was published in a book years ago and I would love to credit the rightful owner who initially came up with the recipe, but the only person I can credit is a family friend, Sharon Shniderman.

Sharon‘s Noodle Kugel (not that official sounding, but that’s all that is on the recipe card)

16 oz. wide egg noodles
8 oz cottage cheese
1 large can (20 oz.) crushed pineapple in heavy syrup
5 large eggs beaten with a fork
4 heaping tablespoons of sour cream
1 cup sugar
½ teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla

Topping:
1/2 stick butter
1 c. Corn Flake crumbs (or crushed Corn Flakes)

½ stick butter to grease the pan

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cook and drain noodles according to package directions.  Let cool.
Mix all ingredients together except corn flake crumbs and butter.
Melt 1/2 stick butter and use it to grease 9″ x 13″ baking dish.
Pour mixture into pan.
Top with Corn Flake crumbs and small pieces of remaining 1/2 stick of butter.
Bake about 1 hour at 350 degrees.  Let cool 1/2 hour before trying to cut into squares.
Makes 12-16 pieces.

This kugel freezes well.  You can also half bake it and then freeze.  Just make sure to thaw it completely before baking for additional 1/2 hour.  Leftovers can also be reheated in microwave, but we doubt there will be any leftovers!!

Please share your favorite recipes with us.  Obviously we love good food.  We will be happy to post them on the blog to share with our friends.

 September 1st, 2009

As we welcome in the Jewish New Year, we would also like to welcome you to the new Dolce website!  We are so excited to be able to showcase our wares for you.

Looking for the classiest, most unique hostess gift to bring to your hosts for Rosh Hashanah?  Not able to join family for the holidays and want to send them a gift for a Sweet New Year?  Or avoiding family and want them to think that you really wanted to be there with them?  Or just having some plain old guilt??

Look no further… We have some amazing gifts for Rosh Hashanah including many kosher foods to meet everyone’s needs.

Be sure to check out the frosted glass and metal contemporary honey dish by Adi Sidler.   Dolce pairs it with a jar of honey for a great holiday gift.

While all the adults “stuff” themselves, keep the kids occupied with the most adorable plush (that means stuffed) Rosh Hashanah toy set.  It has a stuffed apple, jar of honey, candlesticks, and even a stuffed challah.

Don’t forget your neighbors, teachers, college students  away from home and friends.  We will ship gifts anywhere.

Looking forward to a sweet year!

BYOT Party…
 August 23rd, 2009

What is the “T”?  Topping, of course.  It’s an ice cream sundae party!  This is a great, easy and inexpensive way to entertain.  Invite your friends over and all you have to provide are the beverages and the ice cream. This past Saturday I had a BYOT party and it was a huge success.  The favorite topping of the night, as simple as it sounds, was Homemade Hot Fudge. The recipe is from Nancy Ferreira and thanks to Abby Brunelle for making it and sharing it with all of us.  How easy and impressive it was all at the same time.

  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 2 cups confectionary sugar
  • 1 can evaporated milk (13oz.)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  1. Pour chocolate chips, margarine, sugar and evaporated milk into a saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  3. Cook 8 minutes.
  4. Keep stirring the mixture so it doesn’t burn the bottom of the pan.
  5. Remove from heat.
  6. Add vanilla and cool.
  7. Reheat for serving.
Welcome…
