Use a Celebration to Give Back!

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010
For every big occasion in life we spend tons of money and time on every detail and want our kid’s birthdays, daugher’s weddings or parent’s 50th wedding anniversary’s to be flawless. It’s called love and wanting nothing but the best for those who mean the most in our lives. At the end of the event you sometimes wonder if everyone had a good time and most importantly if it was a success in the eyes of your guest. You focused on all the small details down to the centerpieces on each table.
So here is some food for thought:
What if you spent the same amount of money or less on a small detail like centerpieces and that money went back to charity?

That’s precisley what Dolce wants to share with you. You will see pictures below of an event where owner, Laura Weiss used tools and supplies placed in a fun bucket with a small explanation of what charity they were being donated to.

Why not spend the money on something that goes back to your community?

Your ideas can be endless!
Hopefully this post will inspire you to think about how you can give back at your next party or event. It’s easy to do  and at the end of day you are helping a cause you care about… what guest of an event wouldn’t love that?!
*Dolce would gladly give you help with ideas or help you put together baskets, buckets, etc for your next occasion!

What have you done for your neighbor lately?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

“A bad neighbor is a misfortune, as much as a good one is a great blessing.” — Hesiod

National Good Neighbor Day

Oh, Good Neighbor Day. Don’t we wish that everyone knew about it? Being good neighbors is an important part of the social fiber that makes this country so great. Therefore, it seems only fitting that one day a year honors good neighbors. (holiday insights.com) This holiday was made a national day in the early 70′s and has been proclaimed by Presidents Nixon, Ford, and Carter.

What makes a good neighbor? Is is someone who lends you eggs and butter in a bind? Helps get the water out of your basement when it’s flooded? Watches your kids when you need a break? It definitely means different things to different people.

I am fortunate to have had many great neighbors. They have all been incredibly unique. One has planted gourds with my kids (that have taken over my yard). One bakes banana breads for my son. I like that my neighbor (who is a caterer), brings me extra sweets for the holidays. Although my waistline doesn’t always like it, my tastebuds certainly do! Yesterday, in fact, I have a neigbor who helped us drain the water from our flooded basement! The list could go on and on…

So, as Good Neighbor Day approaches us on September 27, I like to make sure that my neighbors know how much I appreciate them. Besides for the usual neighborly things like lending them eggs and butter, or getting their mail, keeping quiet in the early morning or late at night, I’m going to make sure that I tell them thank you for all they have done for me!

Here are some other suggestions for celebrating the day:
Offer a small gesture to help your neighbor (Deliver their mail to the front door, bring down their garbage from the top of their driveway)
Invite them over for a meal or dessert.
Smile and say hello when they pass.
Mow their grass for them.
Give them a small token of appreciation (a plate of cookies, a gift)
Write them a card.Remember, everyday is good neighbor day! But as we approach the national holiday, let’s truly recognize and appreciate your good neighbor. Hopefully, one of those good neighbors is you!

“A good neighbor is a fellow who smiles at you over the back fence, but doesn’t climb over it.” — Arthur Baer

We’ve Gone Bananas! With BANANAGRAMS!

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

I know what you are thinking…this must be a huge box full of bananas and a scale!

It’s the anagram game that will drive you bananas! –hence BANANAGRAMS!

The game’s 144 tiles come in a cute, yellow, banana shaped zipper-pouch! It’s a pouch that you can bring anywhere-to restaurants, picnics, school, airplanes… All you need is a table (no pens, paper, batteries, or timer). You don’t even need to wait your turn!

You can play Bananagrams with up to 8 players of all ages. Each player gets some tiles, someone declares “split” and the game begins. Everyone plays at their own pace and level, using their tiles to form individual crossword. If you can’t use a letter, you can “dump” that letter to take 3 new ones. Run out of letters, and “peel”, making every player to take a new tile. When there are no tiles left, the winner having used all of their tiles, yells “BANANAS!”

It’s a blast! I’ve been known to stay up with friends playing Bananagrams. I know they’ve wanted to leave, but I just need to play “one more time.”

There are several simple variations to playing, or you can come up with your own. Some play with some interesting categories of words (age appropriate, of course!), providing lots of laughs.

Bananagrams was listed as a must-have, one of the top ten best travel games and has been listed as a best-seller among toy and gift retailers.Wikipedia It was named 2009 Game of the Year by the Toy Industry Association.

Bananagrams is a great game to play with company, friends and family. For after dinner, at a picnic or while waiting at a restaurant, you won’t want to leave home without it!
